Maori is an Eastern Polynesian language spoken by the Maori people, who are the native residents of mainland New Zealand.

It is also known as Te Reo Maori (the language of Maori), or te reo (the language) and is closely related to Cook Islands Maori, Tahitian, and Tuamotuan.

The Maori language obtained acceptance as one of New Zealand’s official languages in 1987.

There are different versions of The Lord’s Prayer in Maori from various churches and denominations. See two English translations below, along with the Maori words at the end.

The Lord’s Prayer in Maori: 1st English Version

Our Father in the kingdoms of Heaven,

How excellent and holy is Your Name,

Bring to us the power of Your Christ

Let it happen in the way that is You,

And let it happen here on earth

In the same way as it is in the kingdoms of Heaven.

Give us now the food we need this day

Wash us of our iniquities and cleanse us from sin

Give us what we have lost

So when we are delivered by Your Spirit,

We will be with You again.

We will not enter into temptation,

Made complete, we will turn away from sin and iniquity.

In the name of Your Christ is the power,

And the glory forever and ever.

Amen

The Lord’s Prayer in Maori: 2nd English Version

Our parent in the spirit world,

Sacred is Your name,

Bring us Your chiefly rule,

May it happen in the way that is to You, good,

May it happen on earth

In the same way as in spirit world.

Give us now

The food we need this day.

Strip us of our sins,

Give us back what we have lost

So that we, the slaves of sin, may be with You again.

Do not lead us into temptation,

May we be whole, away from things evil

Through Your chiefly position is

The power

And the glory

Forever and ever.

Amen

The Lord’s Prayer in Maori

E to matou Matua i te rangi

Kia tapu tou Ingoa

Kia tae mai tou rangatiratanga

Kia meatia tau e pai ai

Ki runga te whenua

Kia rite ano ki to te rangi.

Homai ki a matou aianei

He taro ma matou mo tenei ra.

Murua a matou hara,

Me matou hoki e muru nei

I o te hunga e hara ana ki a matou.

Aua hoki matou e kawea kia whakawaia;

Engari whakaorangia matou i te kino:

Nou hoki te rangatiratanga,

Te kaha, me te kororia,

Ake ake ake.
