Notes about Praying Without Ceasing

In 1 Thessalonians 5, the apostle Paul tells the Thessalonians that it is God’s will for them to pray without ceasing.

Let’s dig a little deeper into what this means…

The Greek word for ceasing was a word used for a hacking cough or for military attacks that were repetitive, which meant steadily recurring. It’s as if we are repeatedly praying under our breath.

No one can literally pray every second of every day, but we can choose to pray often and persistently. We can be looking for opportunities to pray.

When you hear of a person going through something difficult, why not say a prayer right then and there? When a relative, friend, or sister or brother in Christ comes to mind, say a prayer for them.

When you see a stranger, say a prayer for them. We can pray daily for the President and others who have positions of power. We can also pray for the people we come into contact with throughout the day.

Take those ordinary, everyday moments and turn them into prayer moments! Pray as you do the tasks you need to do. When you’re standing in line and waiting for something, pray.

If you love music, sing along to a song that praises God (that’s a prayer of praise!). When we practice and make constant prayer a habit, it becomes natural for us.

When someone asks you to pray for them, do it right away instead of putting it off until later (if you’re like me, there’s a good chance you’ll forget to do it later!). We can pray at any time, in any way, and in any place.

It really is possible to pray without ceasing when we understand what it means. To pray without ceasing means that we pray frequently and in intervals, it becomes a pattern.

When we are aware of God’s continual presence, it’s like a bright ray of light in a pitch-black room. Communicating on this level with God, we will sense His constant presence.

When we become more aware of the many things we have to be grateful for, it helps us communicate more with our heavenly Father.

Just a few examples: “Wow, Lord, You created a gorgeous sunrise! Thank you for that beautiful gift.”

When walking to your car to go to work: “Thank you, God, that I have the blessing of transportation and that You provide for my needs by giving me the job I have.”

When eating lunch: “Thank You, God, for this food. I am so blessed to have something to eat every day.”

It’s seeing God in our everyday lives. It’s being eager and quick to pray. It’s about being relentlessly committed. And . . . we don’t ever stop praying.

It’s like the lyrics below from TobyMac’s song called Everything. We are continually enjoying God’s presence in the things (and people) we see, and we are having an ongoing conversation with Him.

I hear You talking to me
It’s in the boom of the thunder, it’s in the cool of the rain
And I’ll say I don’t ever want to get away

I see You in everything, all day
And every beat of my heart keeps reminding me
I see You in every little thing, all day
No matter where I go I know Your love is finding me

Oh, I can see Your love, Your love in everything
And that’s why You’ll always be my everything

Each one of us can choose to be persistent in prayer and to continually grow into the likeness of Jesus Christ! 🙏 May you be blessed.

We should pray when we are in a praying mood, for it would be sinful to neglect so fair an opportunity. We should pray when we are not in a praying mood, for it would be dangerous to remain in so unhealthy a condition.
